Following the success of Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa, Silambarasan took time to choose a good script, as the audience always expect something bigger and better after giving a blockbuster film. He was in talks for his next project with many directors before Telugu blockbuster Vedam caught his eye. Without much delay, the actor expressed his desire to Vaanam makers to act in the remake version and they granted his wish.
Vaanam is the story of five individuals, who belong to different professions, lifestyle etc. Their characters represent the Pancha Bootha (five elements) - Earth, Water, Fire, Air and Space. Silambarasan plays the role named Cable Raju, who hails from the lower middle class. Anushka portrays the role of Saroja, a prostitute. Bharath will be seen as an aspiring rockstar, Bharath Chakravarthy, Prakash Raj as a muslim, Jasmin Bhasin as a rich girl, who is in love with Cable Raju, Saranya Ponvannan as a socially backward woman, who sells her kidney for her son's education. The story of the film is interwoven among the five principal characters.
The casting game started soon after RV Choudary acquired the Tamil remake rights of Vedam. Initially, he thought of making the film for his son Jeeva but he dropped his plans after Silambarasan showed keen interest to remake the film. It was then sold to VTV Ganesh and R Ganesh for hefty price. After they bagged the rights, Simbu got actively involved in the film. He convinced Radhakrishna Jagarlamudi, who directed Vedam, to remake it in Tamil as well. Later, the actor started the hunt for the female lead roles. It was reported that Namitha and Anushka Shetty were approached for the key roles. But the latter reportedly rejected the offer, as she was not keen to repeat the same role.
Reports claimed that the makers of the film decided to have an item number in the Tamil version, which did not feature in the original. It was also reported that Anushka Shetty would shake her legs for the special number. Later, Anushka ended all the speculations regarding to the item song and said that she will do the same role of a prostitute in Vaanam. In the meantime, Manchu Manoj, who enacted the role of rockstar in Vedam, was roped in to portray the same role but he opted out after he was injured during one of his films' shooting. He was replaced by Bharath. Then, Sneha Ullal was signed to play Simbu's love interest in the film. She even shot some portions before walking out of the film due to unknown reasons. A Delhi-based model Jasmin Bhasin stepped into her shoes. By November 2010, the movie shooting started and the movie cast was finalized with the inclusion of Vega Tamotia, Sonia Agarwal, Prakash Raj, Santhanam etc.
Meanwhile, Yuvan Shankar Raja was roped in to score the music and he was ready with the first single of the film by November. It was released on Nov 27 to popularize the film. After getting a good response, he started the composition of the songs in December and released the full album on March 21. Vaanam has five songs for which Na Muthukumar, Simbu, Abhishek have penned the lyrics. Most of the songs have already topped the chart.
