In the wake of the U.S. assassination of Osama bin Laden, I have found it interesting to listen to the various reactions to this news, both in the U.S. and around the world. Most agree bin Laden was evil, deserving of punishment by death, but many disagree on how that death should have come about, citing examples of war criminals throughout history who were brought to trial and their crimes made known to the world, such as the Nazi war criminals of the Nuremberg trials.
As I review this film, I am reminded of another such war criminal, Slobodan Milosevic, former President of Serbia and Yugoslavia, accused of inciting war crimes in the Bosnian region conflict in which the Serbian army crimes against Bosnian Muslims and Croats were declared genocide by the U.S. government, the United Nations and others. After a prolonged and inconclusive five year trial, Milosevic died in prison without conviction, but the victims will bear the scars for generations to come. The Sonoma International Film Festival screened an important film this year that narrows our focus of this travesty to the victims of the Bosnian conflict. Very few Americans can imagine the horrors of war without experiencing it, let alone a civil war between cultures ungoverned by the Geneva Convention and fueled by generations of tribal animosity. "As If I Am Not There" is one such story of a young woman who is taken captive and transported to a Serbian prison camp. This film is a front row seat on the dehumanizing atrocities committed against female prisoners of the Bosnian war.
