The sky started falling last week with the 2 hour episode of the newest TV on TNT, the Falling Skies. The series debuts last Sunday, June 19, 2011 with special 2-hour marathon of the first and second episode of the series. In the first hour of the Falling Skies, the pilot episode “Live and Learn” was aired at 9, and then it was followed by Falling Skies Season 1 Episode 2: Armory for the next hour.
The debut episodes of Falling Skies recorded a huge 5.91 million viewers, leading all Sunday cable in primetime. The first two episodes of Falling Skies received positive reviews. Review aggregate Metacritic awarded the series a score of 71%, based on 26 reviews, indicating “Generally favorable reviews”. However, not all critical reviews for the Falling Skies were positive. In a review in Variety, Brian Lowry states that he enjoyed the action sequences but that “the soapier elements mostly fall flat”, while also calling the series “painfully old-fashioned”.
Falling Skies is a post-apocalyptic sci-fi drama that tells the story of the aftermath of an alien invasion. The ER star Noah Wyle played the lead role as Tom Mason, a former Boston history teacher who becomes the second-in-command of the 2nd Mass, a group of civilians and fighters fleeing post-apocalyptic Boston. He has three sons: Hal, the oldest, Ben, the middle child who was taken by the Skitters, and Matt, the youngest. His wife died a short time after the invasion. He is good friends with Anne Glass, and also shares some of her views on the rights of civilians.
Falling Skies has some similarities to the other sci-fi TV series also aired on TNT, The Walking Dead, which also began its story after a major, apocalyptic event that would usually be the prime story in a film. But Falling Skies is a good show that has its own tone and mood and pronounced differences from The Walking Dead – most notably that Falling Skies picks up further down the road, and involves a much more organized and militarized force on the human side.
You have to be the judge whether this new show s*cks and just a lame copy of The Walking Dead or it is a series that would make your Sunday viewing worth its while. You can watch Falling Skies episode online, replays will be available here at freepoptv.com after the few minutes of its airing on TV.
