Let us begin with Vonnie Lui’s breasts: they are impressively huge, in 3D, and honoured with the kind of extreme close-up shot that was never offered the face of the semi-famous model/actress. In other words, we’re talking three good reasons to see – or not see – this 3D period erotica from writer-producer Stephen Shiu Yeuk-yuen, who’s reimagining his own classic Sex and Zen (1991) for the new porn-saturated era. It would, of course, be a backhanded slight to the stereoscopic naked women parading onscreen to insist upon a story, but for much of this porn flick’s 118-minute runtime (watch out later for an extended 135-minute version if you’re really into this stuff), the viewers are rewarded with a constant flow of wacky humour that, appropriate as it is, begins with our hero’s microscopic member.

When young and handsome scholar Wei Yangsheng (Hiro Hayama) falls madly in love at first sight with a noble family’s daughter Tie Yuxiang (Leni Lan), happiness seems to be well within grasp. But as he discovers his ineptness in the bedroom following the two’s marriage, Wei makes his ill-advised pilgrimage to the Pavilion of Ultimate Bliss, where the wicked Prince of Ning (Tony Ho), apparently, enjoys his ultimate bliss with his army of nymphos. Heeding Ning’s extraordinary insight that what he really needs is an enlargement (it is, after all, before the days of friendly spam emails), the post-divorce protagonist goes the radical distance in swapping his own with a donkey’s.

As Wei basks in his newfound well-hung glory, little does he know of Ning’s secret grudge against him – which is really just an excuse to turn this movie into full-on B-movie mode. With impressive production values and glorious visual effects, it’s nonetheless an unwelcome distraction when daggers begin to fly out from the screen – cutting up security guards that no one cares the slightest about in the first place. As the naughty action gives way to a litany of tasteless spectacles (torture, rape, amputation, etc.), the new Sex and Zen easily proves itself to be the first landmark exploitation movie in the 3D era. Its takeaway message – that true love doesn’t need making – is ultimately just the icing on the cake.
